Students in London paid an average Pounds 87 a week in private rent last year, Pounds 1,150 more than a full grant and loan. Outside London, rents were Pounds 41 a week, leaving just Pounds 450 to cover other costs. The National Union of Students' 25th accommodation costs survey, published this week, reveals students paid an average of Pounds 48 a week to live in university accommodation and that these rents were expected to rise by about 4.75 per cent this year. The survey shows students in London paid about 60 per cent of their weekly income on rent last year and only slightly less outside London.
