May 7, 2002

Brussels, 06 May 2002

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is to hold an information day in Madrid, Spain, on 12 June.

Entitled 'The JRC's strategic role in the European research area', the event will outline the recent work of the JRC and its plans for the future. Details will be given on how the JRC intends to use its budget of 1,050 million euro in the Commission's Sixth Framework programme (FP6).

The JRC will participate in FP6 in areas where it has key competencies, including food and chemical safety, the environment and health and nuclear safety and security. It will also be involved in the horizontal activities of FP6, including technology foresight, reference measurements and metrology, and public security and antifraud.

The JRC hopes that this event will promote a structured dialogue with prominent research organisations in Spain, identify potentially interested partners and pave the way for enhanced collaboration. As one of the European Commission's Directorates General, the JRC networks with scientific institutions and industry both inside and outside the EU in order to help develop common scientific references and integrate research findings and expertise.
