Fundamental medical research will be sped up thanks to pilot centres funded by the Medical Research Council at the universities of Dundee, King's College London, Edinburgh, Nottingham and a partnership between Bristol and Cardiff universities. At Nottingham, eight areas of research are being pursued, including the prevention and treatment of bone infection, the development of a heart monitor for babies resuscitated at birth, and the development of new wound-care products. It has received block funding of £2 million from the MRC to "drive through goal-orientated translational research".
