Science academies across the globe have called for action to redress the "persistent underrepresentation" of women in science.
A report by the InterAcademy council, which represents 90 science organisations including the UK's Royal Society, said that its members must set an example by recruiting more women. Women make up 5 per cent of a typical academy's fellows.
