James Lusty, the vice-chancellor of the University of Wales Newport, has announced that he is to take early retirement at the end of the year "to spend more time with his family".
Professor Lusty, who chairs Higher Education Wales, the group representing Welsh vice-chancellors, has been Newport's vice-chancellor since January 2002.
