Christopher Todd Brown is suing the University of California, Santa Barbara, after it refused him a masters degree. Mr Brown included the phrase "**** you" in the "disacknowledgements" section of his materials science thesis. He was told by dean Charles Li that his thesis would be approved only if he removed the offending material. But he refused and decided to sue instead. The US Supreme Court will rule next month on Mr Brown's free-speech rights.
