Is British football's relatively poor record in European competition down to the anti-intellectual culture of the game here?

The UEFA Champions League Statistical Handbook entry for Norwegian champions Rosenborg Trondheim, who surprisingly eliminated five-time winners AC Milan last week, says: "The fact that the city has a highly rated university helps to attract young players anxious to combine sport and education."
