Sir Garry Johnson, 61, chairman of the International Defence Advisory Board to the Baltic States and Republic of Georgia and director of his own consultancy, will stand down as chairman of the TEC National Council at the end of the year. Jacqui Henderson, former managing director of Northumberland TEC, joined the council this week as chief executive.

Jimmy Chubb, dean of college studies, University of Liverpool, and reader in biological studies, has become chair of the Council of Validating Universities.

Stephen McNair, associate director of the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education, has been appointed professor and head of education at the University of Surrey.

Keith Jones, former chairman and current vice-chairman of the Association of University Administrators, has succeeded David Allen as registrar of the University of Nottingham.

Wallace Ewart, director of the Spingvale project, has been appointed pro vice-chancellor and provost (Belfast) at the University of Ulster.

Katherine Leni Oglesby, former academic dean and head of the school of educational studies, University of Surrey, has become pro vice-chancellor and dean of the faculty of community studies, law and education at Manchester Metropolitan University. Neill Nugent, professor of politics, Manchester Metropolitan University, gains a Jean Monnet chair in European integration.

Toni Griffiths, dean of new initiatives at the Institute of Education, University of London, goes to the new post of director of education and professional development in the education and information support division of University College, London.

Rebecca Boden, former senior lecturer in accounting at the University of Sheffield, has become professor of accounting at Middlesex University.

Janet Bainbridge, director of the school of science and technology, University of Teesside, has become president of European Women in Science and Technology, an organisation that encourages women in science.

Nottingham Trent has appointed Sue Newell, former senior lecturer at Warwick Business School, as professor of innovation and organisational analysis, finance and business information systems, at Nottingham Business School; William Niven, former lecturer in German at the University of Aberdeen, as a reader in German; Heikki Patomakl, senior researcher at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, as a reader in the department of international studies; Mike Rosenbaum, senior lecturer in engineering geology at Imperial College, London, as research professor in the Geohazards Research Group, department of civil and structural engineering; and Jean Underwood, former reader in education at Leicester University, as professor of psychology.
