PhD jobs crisis

I had not realised a PhD was intended as preparation for lecturing. If this were the case, it would be a vocational qualification, not an academic one. When I began my postgraduate career I was warned not to regard a doctorate as a qualification that would necessarily lead to a career in academia. There is a worrying tendency in HE to confuse education with training.
