Charles Taylor, professor of philosophy at Northwestern University, Illinois, has won this year's £800,000 Templeton Prize for progress towards research or discoveries about spiritual realities. The prize recognises his "longstanding efforts to examine what role 'spiritual thinking' should have in modern society, and particularly how it can help solve problems of violence and bigotry".
