Three university engineering departments this week pocketed Pounds 50,000 each as winners of the secretary of state (Department of Trade and Industry) University/Industry Partnership Prizes. Birmingham University's School of Metallurgy and Materials, Cardiff's Manufacturing Engineering Centre and Surrey University's Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing, were joint winners in the competition, which awards university departments, centres and units judged to have built the most effective partnerships with industry in the past year. The concrete technology unit at the University of Dundee won Pounds 25,000.
