The environment element of the Research Excellence Framework focuses on the vitality and sustainability of the environment that universities provide for research, assessed on institutional- and unit-level submissions.
Imperial College London achieves the highest grade point average for this metric, up one place on last time. It is ahead of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the Institute of Cancer Research and the University of Oxford.
On our research power metric, which takes into account institutional scale, Oxford is top, ahead of UCL and the universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh and Manchester.
Environment scores account for 15 per cent of overall scores in the 2021 exercise.
