Restore a pizza the wall

May 17, 2002

A pizza company that has helped to save countless crumbling buildings in Venice is to support a threatened medieval wall at St Andrews University.

The Veneziana Fund, which is the charitable arm of Pizza Express, receives money from the sale of the Veneziana pizza in its restaurants.

The fund has given the university £5,000 towards the £90,000 cost of restoring the Long Walk Wall.

The wall marks the dividing line of two plots that were laid out in the 12th century. It has been undermined by time, weather and encroaching ivy.

Librarian gets a Benson Congratulations to librarian David Sutton of the University of Reading, who has been awarded the Benson medal by the Royal Society of Literature. The medal is only awarded on an occasional basis for outstanding writing or exceptional services to literature.

Past winners include E. M. Forster, J. R. R Tolkien and Stella Benson, and Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer.

Dr Sutton (pictured above), who provides research aids for literary scholars, said: "Apart from Philip Larkin (who was a rather special case), I believe that I am the first librarian to receive this award and I would like to see it as a recognition of all the work which librarians do to make great literature possible."
