Brazil's illiteracy ratehas fallen to 12 per cent of the population from 17 per cent in 1995, education minister Paulo Renato Souza has announced. The participation of 180 university institutes, 13 more than last year, in literacy projects nationwide is expected to cut the rate to 9 per cent within two years.
