A consortium of universities has won £2.7 million to help turn the UK's first purpose-built media community into a "living laboratory". MediaCity in Manchester is set to become home to 2,500 BBC staff by 2011 and is the second-largest construction project in the UK after the 2012 Olympic site in East London. A group led by the University of Salford and involving the University of Cambridge, Goldsmiths, University of London and Lancaster University has won funding to develop a plan for research and innovation at MediaCity.
