The popularity of TV series such as Silent Witness is often cited as a good way to market scientific careers to youngsters. But it appears the concept has morphed into an altogether less helpful suggestion. Peter Cotgreave, director of the Campaign for Science and Engineering, overheard one young woman being told that she could engage her interest in chemistry by going to acting school and then getting a part in a TV show about forensic science.
