The Treasury's sudden foray into research funding policy continues to antagonise those in charge of higher education budgets. The Welsh and Scottish funding chiefs expressed their disquiet at the inaugural meeting of the Eastwood-Wilson group considering the future of the research assessment exercise. Treasury officials seem not to have realised that the RAE is a UK-wide exercise, neglecting to inform the Scots or Welsh of the proposed reforms unveiled in last month's Budget.
