Shallow waters of the mid-Indian ocean ridge

June 6, 1997

Julia Hinde marks World Oceans' Day with a trawl of marine research

* The relatively shallow waters of the mid-Indian ocean ridge, which runs from Mauritius on the Tropic of Capricorn to the Seychelles, on the equator, are to be put under the microscope over the next few years.

More than 100 British scientists will embark on the Shoals of Capricorn Marine Programme.

Coordinated by the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society, marine biologists and geologists, oceanographers and archaeologists will be casting their nets across the ocean to gather more information about the little-known aquatic region.
