The Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council last week approved plans to introduce an open competition to support truly new ideas or initiatives. Its chief executive, Ian Halliday (above), had previously complained that the present method for allocating cash is too conservative and is "cutting the heads off the tall poppies".
