* The University of Southampton has joined forces with the Royal Military College of Science to offer university places to those wanting a technical career in the forces or a civilian role in the Ministry of Defence.
Bill Wakeham, vice-chancellor of the university, and Major General Robert Baxter have signed a memorandum of understanding that officially recognises the defence technical undergraduate scheme. It will provide sponsored places for students on selected engineering and scientific degree courses. Undergraduate training at the RMCS will cease in 2006.
