C. P. Snow's "two cultures" concept has been most eloquently illustrated by BBC quizmaster Robert Robertson's attempt to pronounce the name of a group of chemical elements during this week's edition of Brain of Britain 2002 on Radio 4.
Having never encountered the word "actinides" - after the element actinium - he gave this section of the periodic table a Hellenic emphasis, opting for "actinydees".
