St Andrews University says it will defend itself "robustly" against a lawsuit by a former student who says she was raped in 1996 during an exchange trip to Odessa in the Ukraine.
Erin McLean, who has now returned home to the US, has won support from the Scottish Legal Aid Board to bring a Pounds 100,000 action against St Andrews, claiming lack of care by the university in allowing students to go to a dangerous area.
Ms MacLean says she was raped by three soldiers while leaving a beach in the morning.
