Stars' baby pictures

September 2, 2005

Pictures showing the birth of stars more than 1,000 light years away from Earth were unveiled this week by a project backed by British universities.

The colour images are the first taken by the Southern African Large Telescope (Salt), the largest telescope in the southern hemisphere.

The £11 million Salt project is an international partnership backed by a UK consortium from the University of Central Lancashire, Keele, Nottingham and Southampton universities, the Open University and Armagh Observatory.
