Brussels, 22 July 2002
The European Commission's Research DG has launched a new website providing statistics and indicators on women and science.
The Research DG's Women and Science unit, in collaboration with the statistical correspondents of the Helsinki Group on women and science and Eurostat, have been collecting data on women scientists for nearly two years. The new site contains consolidated statistical information comparing EU Member States for all available years since 1990 on a variety of themes.
Indicators are listed according to four questions:
- How many women are there in European research?
- How are women and men concentrated and polarised in the different scientific fields?
- Are women evenly represented all the way up scientific hierarchies?
- Are women as likely as men to obtain research funding?
A variety of statistics cover issues such as researchers by gender and institutional sector, academic staff by gender and level, funding applicants and beneficiaries by gender and fund.
