American educationist Adam Gamoran this week gave a public lecture at Edinburgh University warning that creating separate classes for high-achieving pupils risks exacerbating social inequality.
Professor Gamoran of the University of Wisconsin-Madison said that grouping pupils by academic ability had generally been shown to result in poor teaching for low achievers.
