Southampton University's annual surplus more than doubled in the academic year 1993/94, rising from Pounds 3.5 million to Pounds 8.1 million. Pounds 2.3 million came from the release of an over-provision for pensions in previous years, with most of the remainder due to success in obtaining research grants and contracts.
