The Teacher Training Agency has offered Pounds 10 million to universities and colleges to induce them to recruit more trainee teachers in shortage subjects such as mathematics, modern languages and science. Institutions may bid for the funds to help them hit recruitment targets, which are 11 per cent up on last year for secondary teacher training and 5 per cent down for primary teaching.
