The Home Office and the Ministry of Justice need to shift the balance from short-term science to longer term strategic work that will "minimise the need for 'firefighting' in future", a review published this week by the Government's Chief Scientific Adviser says. The review is generally positive about the departments' use of science but suggests areas for improvement, including giving strategic science a more prominent role.
