The University and College Union is consulting on academic freedom and what it means. A discussion document, circulated last week, says: "In the absence of an agreed UCU policy statement, the education committee agreed to seek the views of UCU branches, local associations and members on these issues." Issues under consideration include the main threats to academic freedom in higher education and the appropriate boundaries between freedom of speech and academic responsibilities.
