British academic Norma Reid Birley this week resigned as vice-chancellor of the University of the Wi****ersrand in South Africa and is to leave her post with immediate effect. Council chair Justice Edwin Cameron said that if she had not resigned after an independently chaired inquiry he would have recommended her suspension pending disciplinary action for alleged misconduct.
