The work of British film-maker Shane Meadows will come under the spotlight at an academic conference. The event at the University of East Anglia, Straight Outta Uttoxeter: The Films of Shane Meadows, will feature speakers discussing various themes and issues raised in movies such as Once Upon a Time in the Midlands (2002), Dead Man's Shoes (2004) and This Is England (2007). Topics to be covered include post-industrialism, post-Thatcherism and the politics of disenchantment; the director's treatment of motherhood and British femininity; and violence, performance and comedy. Delegates will also discuss Mr Meadows' use of untrained actors and his interest in the skinhead subculture.
