Royalties earned by a university following the publication last year of the Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary are to be pumped into a series of postgraduate scholarships to fund new research into the English language.
The University of Glasgow expects to offer four scholarships, which will cover recipients' fees for the first year of their research. The programme will start in the next academic year and will be open to "exceptional students" looking to study either modern or historical English.
