Is forgetting a necessary process that societies must undergo in order to progress? This is the question that will be addressed at a conference, Cultural Memory: Forgetting to Remember/Remembering to Forget, which will take place at the University of Kent's Canterbury campus between 10 and 13 September. Ana de Medeiros, senior lecturer in French and conference organiser, said: "This conference brings together specialists from over 20 countries with a rich diversity of approaches ... leading, no doubt, to exciting new directions in the study of cultural memory."
