Students should be free to vote with their feet - which would promote diversity in higher education, a conference will hear next week.
Alasdair Smith (pictured), vice-chancellor of the University of Sussex, will tell delegates at the Association of University Administrators' annual conference in Southampton that a more competitive system in which funding follows students would promote a diverse system and would better match supply and demand.
