The upgrading of Waterford's technical college has inspired Irish jokers to recall the legendary Grimsby project provisionally titled the South Humberside Institute of Technology until acronymic implications dawned. With graduates of the Waterford Institute of Technology labelled the WITs, what will happen if other colleges are upgraded? Dundalk would become DIT but there is already a DIT in Dublin so maybe in should become DITTO, while the Sligo Institute of Technology glories in being known as SIT. And then there are Tralee and Galway . . .
