A major reorganisation is planned for the 17 universities of Paris and the Ile-de-France over the next 15 years under the Universities of the Third Millennium programme. The universities cater for half-a-million students and are spread over 131 sites. They will be
reorganised into groups with other higher education schools and research institutes, and should acquire an "international
dimension".
