Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is an international joint venture university founded by Xi’an Jiaotong University (China) and the University of Liverpool (UK) in 2006.

The University currently offers approximately 51 bachelor's, 55 master's, and 17 doctoral programmes in the fields of in the fields of science, engineering, business, finance, architecture, urban planning, language, culture, and all are taught in English except for general and basic courses.

Undergraduate students earn two degrees: an XJTLU degree from the Chinese Ministry of Education and a globally recognised degree from the University of Liverpool. Postgraduate students receive a University of Liverpool degree that is recognised by the Ministry of Education.

XJTLU is located in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), Suzhou. It’s one of the most developed cities in China. Suzhou Industrial Park, China’s equivalent of Silicon Valley and a hub of global innovation, houses a large cluster of Fortune 500 companies, transnational enterprises, and R&D centres, not only providing favourable conditions for XJTLU’s ongoing development but also numerous internship and job opportunities for XJTLU students.

ABOUT XJTLU In 2006 Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) was created by the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong University – a top ten university in China. SE is a new model developed by the University to address an increasingly networked and complex future of work in the 4th Industrial Revolution. The model is core to the University’s strategy for its next ten-year development focusing on innovation and entrepreneurship. RESPONSIBILITIES We are looking for future colleagues who can: Understand and have an entrepreneur and innovative mindset, in line with the ethos of the College. Deliver high-quality teaching to undergraduate and graduate students, as evidenced by peers, students and external examiners. Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students. Provide administrative service to the School, the University and its stakeholders. Maintain a sustained record of successful PhD supervision. Work collaboratively with relevant School(s), College and University entities to identify opportunities for meaningful and genuine partnership and successful impact-creation for research. Conduct high-quality industry-enhanced research and consultancy contracts, evidenced by contribution that output makes to industry, the economy, society, environment or culture, beyond the contribution to academic research. Maintain good, sustained, and successful research grants with impact measured by publications in leading journals and other research outputs. Create, develop and manage successful research partnerships with industry, academic institutions, and other external organisations. Support innovative cross-disciplinary research in line with the Entrepreneur College (Taicang) research themes, and become an ambassador for the School for the promotion of cross-boundary research and teaching activities. Contribute to the school’s teaching development through mentoring and supporting early career academics (Associate Professor and above). ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATION/EXPERIENCES A doctoral research (normally PhD) degree in electrical and electronics, mechatronics, intelligent controls, robotics engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence, computer vision, mobile robotics, machine learning, data science and analytics, or be able to demonstrate an equivalent professional practice and engagement. Previous experience in coding (C/C++, Python, ROS etc) in robotics-related domains. Self-motivated for innovative teaching. Clear understanding of the philosophy and concept of Syntegrative Education (SE). Demonstrable past teaching/industry experiences or practices aligned with Syntegrative Education (SE). A commitment to Continual Professional Development in all areas of the role as an academic at the university. Ability to work, teach and research in English Strong team-work spirit. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE A good track record of engagement with business and industry. University-level teaching experience. Relevant industry experience. Appropriate research experience, including working with industry, for the corresponding academic position level. Experience in intensive teaching and problem-based learning, and a willingness to be innovative in teaching practices. An institutional builder, able to work with wider disciplines across the college. Potential (Assistant Professor) or proven record (Associate Professor) in supervising Undergraduate, Master and/or PhD dissertations. International teaching, research, or professional experience. Excellent communication, teamwork, and organisational skills in a diverse and interdisciplinary environment. The Global Languages and Cultures Hub at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University was established in 2025 and is home to three dynamic centres: the Academic Literacies Centre (ALC), the English Language Centre (ELC), and the Modern Languages Centre (MLC).  The Modern Languages Centre (MLC) delivers high-quality language instruction and cultural education in Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish.   The Chinese Language Division offers diverse courses taught by 19 dedicated language lecturers. Students develop strong Chinese language skills and gain a deeper understanding of Suzhou’s and China’s unique cultures through tailored teaching materials and methodologies. Extracurricular cultural activities and field trips provide immersive, real-world opportunities to develop students’ communication skills and enhance their learning experience. Responsibilities and Duties Applications are invited for Chinese language teaching positions in the Global Cultures and Languages Hub at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) before 5th January, 2026. Candidates are sought as soon thereafter as possible. Interviews will be conducted on an ongoing basis. There will be opportunities for Chinese language lecturer to be involved in a range of different types of delivery, such as: Credit-bearing Chinese language modules from beginners to CEFR B2+ level, and Chinese language modules for Specific Purposes, i.e. Business Chinese, Credit-bearing Chinese content modules for degree students majoring in China Studies and Teaching Chinese as an International Language, i.e. Modern Chinese, Classical Chinese, Teaching Chinese as an International Language, Non-credit bearing Chinese courses, i.e. Practical Chinese Courses and Summer School, Engaging with Continuing Support Chinese language and cultural activities, HSK invigilation and item design. There will also be the opportunity for Chinese language lecturer to take on a managerial role with responsibility for the coordination and leadership of the Chinese teaching programmes. Additionally, there are opportunities for all staff to develop their careers by taking on wider managerial and administrative roles, as well as by contributing to both hub and university-level committees. All managerial, administrative and committee roles are appointed to on a fixed-term basis, thus providing all staff members with a range of options to take on responsibilities in areas that interest them. Qualifications/Experiences Successful applicants should be educated to Master’s degree level in a relevant area (e.g. Teaching Chinese as an International Language), and should have at least two years of post-master’s relevant teaching experience, preferably at university level. Additionally, applicants should have a good standard of written and spoken English, as this is the working language of the university. Familiarity with more than one language proficiency standard such as CEFR/HSK/ACTFL is a plus. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates who can demonstrate a dynamic, current and innovative engagement in one or more of the following areas: technology-enhanced language learning and assessment design; content and language integrated learning; Chinese for specific purposes (Business, Academic, etc.); communicative and task-based methodologies and project-based language learning.
