ABOUT XJTLU

In 2006 Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) was created by the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong University – a top ten university in China. Offering a unique international education experience, XJTLU brings together excellent research practice and expertise from both institutions and gives students the skills and knowledge they need to secure careers in a global marketplace. XJTLU now has over 25,000 enrolled students in both Suzhou and Liverpool in the UK, with plans to grow to about 28,000 students by 2025. There are currently about 2,000 staff, among which about 1,000 academic staff, with an almost even split between citizens of the People’s Republic of China and international passport holders. XJTLU is entering a new and exciting phase of its development as part of its strategic priorities for the next ten years. Adopting a new higher education model based on the concept of Syntegrative Education (SE), XJTLU is currently opening a new Entrepreneurial Education site in Taicang, part of wider Suzhou, where the Entrepreneur College (Taicang) is located. The Taicang site will be a pioneer of, and educational model for, the future campus in addressing challenges arising from the 4th Industrial Revolution. Other new initiatives include new working partnerships with Xi’an Jiaotong University, the continued development of the four new Academies, and exploration of further potential locations to develop the SE model.

With a focus on innovative learning and teaching, and research, XJTLU draws on the strengths of its parent universities, and plays a pivotal role in facilitating access to China for UK and other institutional partners. At same time, XJTLU is exploring future education by blending the educational theory, best practice and culture from west and east.

ABOUT SCHOOL OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

The School of Advanced Technology has five departments (intelligent Science, Computing, Mechatronics and Robotics, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Communications and networking). As a research and practice-led school our faculty and staff are committed to providing our students with a challenging and stimulating environment, as well as unlocking their full potential. Upon graduation, students will become highly-sought-after candidates with strong academic knowledge as well as extensive transferable skills in communication, team-work and project management.

All academic staff members at the Department of Mechatronics and Robotics (MEC) are research active and have closely engaged with industry in and around Suzhou to support the research and development of Suzhou’s strategic aim of intelligent manufacturing. Suzhou is one of the top three cities in China and one of the top ten cities in the world in intelligent manufacturing, which provides huge opportunities for research and development, self-development, and employment. With rapidly increased student number, we are seeking applicants with a strong research track record, high level of ambitions, and enthusiasm to engage with our diverse students to join our team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Applicants will have extensive teaching experience, have published high quality papers in their area of expertise, have been successful in obtaining research grants, and have substantial experience in the supervision of research students. The successful candidate, in addition to teaching typically two modules/courses per year (i.e. one per semester), will provide leadership in curriculum development and enhancing our research profile at the international level. They are expected to assume administrative responsibilities based on their experience.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCES


	A PhD in mechatronics, robotics, biomedical engineering, or a closely aligned area and PG Cert HE or equivalent;
	Ideally few years of teaching/research experience at a university or equivalent after completion of PhD degree;
	PhD supervision capacity;
	Strong publications record in an area of expertise;
	Evidence of success in obtaining research grants;
	Fluency in English.


Successful applicants to more senior professorial ranks are expected to also show:


	A significant record of high-quality academic publications,
	A number of external research grants awards,
	Experience in PhD supervision.


Desirable Qualifications/Experience:


	Professional memberships such as BCS, IET, ACM, IEE, IEEE, and HEA;
	Strong knowledge / experience in international higher education.


CITIZENSHIP AND VISA REGULATIONS

The university provides every new faculty members with Research Development Fund to encourage them to initiate research projects, and Research Engagement Fund provided to support their continuous research activities.

In 2019, the XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang) was launched, as a pioneers of, and an educational model for, the future university and campus in developing talents and leaders to meet local, national, and global challenges arising from the 4th Industrial Revolution.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF INTELLIGENT FINANCE AND BUSINESS

The School of Intelligent Finance and Business is one of 7 industry-themed Schools in the XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang campus), and there is the capacity to grow further within the college to a total of 10 schools. Common to each School is an Education, Research and Development Institute (“ERDI”) for teaching and university-business research collaboration, a professional services centre supporting daily activities of students, staff, and business partners, and a School Affiliated Company, which has been jointly established by XJTLU and the School’s industry partner for practical on-the-job learning and teaching. The governance and management of the School is through a School Council. The Dean of School oversees the School Management Team as well as contributing to the leadership of the Taicang campus.

The School of Intelligent Finance and Business is jointly developed by the University and an industry partner, AMT, to deliver the industry-themed programme(s). The first degree programme that the School has launched for the Academic Year 2019/2020 is BSc Intelligent Supply Chain.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

The School of Intelligent Finance and Business is adopting a new higher education model based on the concept of Syntegrative Education (SE). SE is a new model that has been developed by the University to address future challenges from the 4th Industrial Revolution and is a core part of the University’s strategy for the next ten-year development that stresses innovation and entrepreneurship. 	Engage actively with new educational models and embrace innovative, interactive, technology-enhanced learning, teaching, and assessment approaches; understand and have an entrepreneur and innovative mindset in line with College ethos.
	Contribute to the school’s teaching development through mentoring and supporting early career academics (Associate Professor and above).
	Undertake any other appropriate tasks assigned by the Entrepreneur College or University through the Dean of School or College Senior Management Team.


ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: 

Successful applicants are expected to have:


	A PhD degree in areas such as: Digital Marketing, Digital Economy, Business Analytics and Information System Management; or be able to demonstrate an equivalent professional practice and engagement.Quantitative approach to research is preferred;
	Self-motivated for innovative teaching.
	Clear understanding of the philosophy and concept of Syntegrative Education(SE).
	Demonstrable past teaching/industry experiences or practices aligned with Syntegrative Education (SE).
	A commitment to Continual Professional Development in all areas of the role as an academic at the university.
	Ability to work, teach and research in English
	Strong team-work spirit.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: 


	A good track record of engagement with business and industry.
	University-level teaching experience.
	Relevant industry experience.
	Appropriate research experience, including working with industry, for the corresponding academic position level.
	Experience in intensive teaching and problem-based learning, and a willingness to be innovative in teaching practices.
	An institutional builder, able to work with wider disciplines across the college.
	For non-Chinese applicants, two years, full time, same subject teaching in a college/university is required by the Chinese work permit policy.

About the Position of Associate Vice President for Research and Impact 

In 2021, with the University’s continued expansion and success, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University established two academic leadership roles: Associate Vice-President for Education (AVP-E) and Associate Vice-President for Research and Impact (AVP-R&I). The essential rationale for creating these roles is to strengthen strategic leadership in the broad area of academic affairs by increasing the level of strategic responsibility for each.

The AVP-R&I works closely with the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), School Deans, Associate Deans for Research, as well as Directors of ERDI, in the formulation and implementation of academic strategy across the University - and externally with partners in industry and society – on all matters relating to Research & Impact. This remit includes, inter alia, research productivity, research culture(s) and research environment(s). In particular, the AVP-R&I will lead on the strategic development of areas such as research excellence, research KPIs, research income generation, research performance and output, research impact in society and communities. The AVP-R&I will also help drive initiatives in research-led teaching in liaison with the AVP-E.

The University now seeks to appoint a senior academic leader to take on the leadership role of Associate Vice President for Research and Impact. It is envisaged that the person in the post would normally already be a full Professor with a minimum of two years’ relevant experience in strategic leadership and an appropriate background in developing and implementing institutional strategies, with international experience being highly preferred. This is a demanding role at a moment of dynamic expansion for XJTLU.

This AVP-R&I position is open to both internal and external candidates. The post holder should also fulfil the duty as a full contracted academic staff and retain a teaching role and maintain his/her own research activity.

The post holder will be a member of the SMT, and will also chair relevant research committees as appropriate. The role descriptions are outlined below.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities 


	Serving as a member of the extended Senior Management Team, Academic Steering Committee, and other senior leadership committees;
	Pro-active engagement with the strategic development of postgraduate research and impact in collaboration with the Director of the Graduate School, Directors of PG Research, Directors of ERDI, and other stakeholders as appropriate;
	In full collaboration with the VPAA, leading on the University’s research and impact strategies and strategic development with an emphasis on research productivity, KPIs, objectives and targets;
	Chairing the University Research Committee, other committees as necessary, and ensuring effective communication and implementation of institutional research and impact strategies across the University including XJTLU’s multiple sites;
	Overseeing the strategic development of research and impact in all academic units with an urgent emphasis on those academic units that are new such as the Academies. This will include overseeing the ongoing development of localised research strategies as well as groups, institutes and centres;
	Providing strategic leadership and direction in relation to the development of key international collaborative partnerships and industry-linked research and impact initiatives;
	Providing strategic advice and direction about global trends and opportunities in research and impact where such is needed for units including but not limited to the University Research Centres, Research Institutes, the International Technology Transfer Centre, International Innovation Hub and Key Labs.
	Leading on and developing, in conjunction with VPAA, Associate Dean of Research, Research Management Office, and other key stakeholders, strategies designed to increase external grant capture through negotiation and liaison with local, regional and international research funding bodies;
	Foster interdisciplinary and innovative research and optimise both collaboration with governments, industries and external partners in the city of Suzhou and Yangtze Delta Region, and the impact of the University’s funding for research;
	Advising academic units and related administrative support teams regarding matters requiring strategic and/or academic judgement plus decision-making for all aspects of research, research impact development, research training, research ethics and governance, and research grants;
	Other duties assigned by VPAA and Senior Management Team.

ABOUT ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND ENTERPRISE HUB

The Entrepreneur and Innovation Hub (EEH) is a growing platform for teaching, learning, entrepreneurship and innovation under the guidance of the Dean and Associate Dean. Providing entrepreneurial connectivity to 7 technology-focused schools at the heart of the Entrepreneur College (Taicang) campus, it aims to become integral to the wider university, as well as local, and regional innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Candidates should have expertise in two or more of the following areas:

Technology start-up; Innovation; Technopreneurship; Entrepreneurship/Intrapreneurship; Incubators & Accelerators; Software or Hardware development, Creative Industries; Heavy or Light industries; Technology Transfer. Experience of developing innovation and entrepreneurship-related programmes would be an advantage. Applicants should be comfortable with innovative teaching approaches, and working with students from a variety of backgrounds. Applications should ideally also have industry experience.

The successful applicant should be able to:


	Understand and have an entrepreneurial and innovative mindset, in line with the ethos of the College.
	Bring their lived creative, industrial or technological experiences to life in the minds of students.
	Design engaging, innovative modules, short courses and/or other learning activities.
	Deliver high-quality teaching to undergraduate and graduate students, as evidenced by peers, students and external examiners.
	Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students
	Provide administrative service to the School, the University and its stakeholders.
	Develop successful PhD supervision. Work collaboratively with relevant School(s), College and University entities to identify opportunities for meaningful and genuine partnership and successful impact-creation.
	Conduct high-quality industry-enhanced research and/or consultancy projects, evidenced by contribution that output makes to industry, the economy, society, environment or culture, beyond the contribution to academic research.
	Create, develop and manage successful research partnerships with industry, academic institutions, and other external organisations.
	Support innovative cross-disciplinary business development in line with the Entrepreneur College (Taicang) research themes, become an ambassador for EEH business development, research and teaching activities.
	Engage actively with new educational models and embrace innovative, interactive, technology-enhanced learning and assessment approaches through an innovative, entrepreneurial mindset in line with College ethos.
	Contribute to the school’s teaching development through mentoring and supporting early career academics (Associate Professor and above).
	Undertake other appropriate tasks assigned by the Entrepreneur College or University through the Dean/Associate Dean of School or College Senior Management Team. 


ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE


	Ideally educated to PhD level in a technological or entrepreneurially-relevant field.
	Teaching experience in a Higher Education Institute or significant equivalent experience facilitating/training teams in an industrial context.
	Knowledge of current debates, trends and issues relating to the expanding field of entrepreneurship and start-up culture.
	A track record of innovation in Learning and Teaching.
	Evidence of excellent organisational and administrative skills.
	Self-motivated for innovative teaching.
	A commitment to Continual Professional Development in all areas of the role as an academic at the university.
	Ability to do work, teaching, research and/or industrial practice in English.
	Strong team-work spirit and desire to take key roles in EEH - a new university platform.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

ABOUT ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND ENTERPRISE HUB

The Entrepreneur and Innovation Hub (EEH) is a growing platform for teaching, learning, entrepreneurship and innovation under the guidance of the Dean and Associate Dean.
