Well done to Michael Paraskos for emphasising that academic conferences that offer reduced fees for students seldom make similar adjustments to attract lecturers on low wages (“Concessions, please”, Letters, 13 April). A related case can be argued for fully retired staff who may continue to be research active but who no longer receive financial support from their former institution. Creating appropriate fee structures to encourage a greater diversity of delegates at conferences would surely be beneficial to all.
