Times Higher Education’s first global event dedicated to research excellence will be held in partnership with Russia’s National University of Science and Technology (MISiS) later this year.

The THE Research Excellence Summit will take place at the Moscow institution from 7 to 9 November 2018. It will be on the theme: “Institutional transformation towards world-class research in the natural sciences”.

The event will host the launch of four THE subject rankings: physical sciences; life sciences; clinical, pre-clinical and health; and psychology, and include data masterclasses revealing insights from the new tables.

It will also feature plenary debates, case studies from senior global university leaders that have succeeded in making rapid progress in growing their research excellence in the natural and physical sciences, and an in-depth focus on successful approaches towards improving academic communication beyond the higher education sector.

Alevtina Chernikova, rector of MISiS, said that the summit will “not only promote the exchange of best practices and discuss topical issues of universities’ transformation in the era of the digital economy, but also strengthen international cooperation of universities and collaborations in science and education”.

“It is an honour for MISiS to be a co-organiser of the first fully global THE Research Excellence Summit in Russia,” she said.

“Today, the university is undergoing a profound transformation of all spheres of activity – research, education and innovation – to improve the quality of education and the effectiveness of scientific research.”

Phil Baty, THE editorial director of global rankings, said that the summit will “allow us to share fresh and unique data insights into the performance of universities across the world in the natural sciences fields but, more importantly, it will bring university leaders from across the world to share best practice and to share their strategic insights into how to transform universities into world-class research powerhouses and, we hope, to forge exciting new strategic alliances with their international colleagues”.

“Russia’s excellence initiative, designed to drive up the international competitiveness of Russia’s leading research universities, is very closely aligned to the performance benchmarks used to create the THE World University Rankings – research excellence and international collaboration in particular – and THE has vast amounts of data and analysis demonstrating the progress being made in Russia, and benchmarking performance across the rest of the world.

“So we are delighted, after several regionally focused events, to be holding our first fully global Research Excellence Summit in Moscow and, in particular, to be launching four of our global subject rankings exclusively at the event.”
