Driven by the synergy of top-notch research output and groundbreaking entrepreneurship programmes, CityU has become one of the world’s most innovative universities. We advocate the integration of teaching and research, promote a knowledge-based economy, and aim to become a recognised core component of social impact. Our outstanding innovation and research capabilities have been repeatedly recognised.

According to metrics compiled by Stanford University, more than 180 CityU faculty members are listed among the top 2% of the world’s most highly cited scientists, reflecting the high academic standard of CityU faculty and their excellent research performance. By faculty size, CityU's percentage of the top 2% of the world’s most highly cited scientists is among the top 100 in the world; very few other universities in Asia made the list.

Recently, CityU broke into the top 100 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

CityU has also shone as one of the top 100 universities in the world granted US utility patents, according to the National Academy of Inventors. CityU is ranked 29th in the world, our highest position ever, and is ranked at the top among local universities for the 6th consecutive year. As at the end of August 2022, CityU had applied for more than 1,250 patents for technologies around the globe, of which 701 have been granted.

According to ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2022, 15 academic subjects at CityU are ranked in the top 50 in the world. These results place CityU first among Hong Kong universities for five consecutive years in terms of the highest number of subjects included in the top 50 GRAS list, signifying the University’s excellence and strengths.

CityU also won 22 awards at the Inventions Geneva Evaluation Days 2022, the highest number among local institutions for two years in a row, including one gold medal with Congratulations of the Jury, six gold, 13 silver and two bronze.

To further establish our identity as a world-class university, we launched a vision for our future development. Our Strategic Plan 2020–2025: World-class Research and Education serves as a roadmap for raising CityU’s levels of excellence in both research and education and in bringing benefits to the world. In particular, it identifies five interdisciplinary strategic themes – One Health, Digital Society, Smart City, Matter, and Brain – and a set of action plans.

In a highly interconnected and complex world, a single discipline is often inadequate for seeking solutions to pressing global problems. That’s why at CityU, we foster interdisciplinary research and promote diversity in a variety of methodological approaches.

By advocating excellence in research, CityU will not cease in its quest to make the world a better place.
