The Artificial Intelligence Research Centre at Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University (PMU) has reached a remarkable milestone in healthcare innovation by a dedicated research team led by Professor Sagheer Abbas. In their recent research project “Smart Vision Transparency: The Proposal of the Efficient Ocular Disease Prediction Model Using Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI)” ocular diseases are diagnosed and treated.

Their developed model achieved 95.74% prediction accuracy through advanced transfer learning approaches and game-changing Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). The integration of XAI guarantees that while the model is accurate, it is equally explainable and understandable to address the healthcare industry's critical issues. Integrating XAI into the healthcare industry transforms classical AI systems into models providing transparent and interpretable decision-making to increase trust, improve diagnostics, promote the patient’s rights and meet current legislation.

The model's ability to explain its predictions sets it apart, making it a trusted ally for clinicians and healthcare professionals. The technology is trained to highlight specific patterns in retinal images. It ensures accurate and actionable diagnoses, improving patient care and doctor-patient communication.

This research is more than a scientific milestone; it is a testament to AI's transformative potential in improving global healthcare. It reflects the true potential of combining technology with purpose, and the research work is not just about technological advancement; it’s about bringing hope to millions suffering from vision-threatening conditions like diabetic retinopathy. This is a step toward empowering clinicians with tools that enable early diagnosis and improve patient outcomes.

This achievement also underscores PMU’s growing reputation as a global hub for innovation in artificial intelligence and healthcare. The success of this research speaks volumes of PMU’s commitment as a university to creating an environment where academic achievement is identical to making practical positive changes to the world,” The research aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, reflecting the university’s commitment to addressing critical healthcare challenges through cutting-edge research.
