About the role The post-holder will lead a large business-critical, high-performing unit managing the financial and related administrative requirements of the University’s portfolio of externally-funded grants and contracts. This role is central to the professional and efficient delivery of research support across the university, with a strong emphasis on financial integrity, transparency and communication. The individual will have a particular responsibility for strategic and operational leadership, including team development for the Post-Award staff who manage the administrative aspects of the post-award process for research and consultancy projects. In the last financial year, income from the combined research and consultancy portfolios totalled £M267. This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract. We are seeking a highly accomplished and strategic legal professional to join our senior team as the Director of Legal Services. This pivotal role provides strategic leadership and management for the University of Surrey’s legal function, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, timely, and business-focused legal advice across the full range of university activity. You will be instrumental in developing legal processes and systems, overseeing the delivery of legal services, and managing crucial relationships with external legal advisers to support our ambitious global strategy. The role Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Legal Services will deliver expert legal advice on employment law, student related matters, commercial and IT contracts, procurement, subsidiary governance, data protection, charity law, and operational property matters. The postholder will balance legal risk and regulatory obligations with institutional priorities, providing clear, pragmatic direction on complex issues, ultimately ensuring that there is robust legal compliance across the University and its subsidiaries. The role holds significant institutional accountability as the University’s most senior legal adviser, and is responsible for ensuring that all legal, regulatory, and contractual risks are appropriately identified, managed, and escalated. The postholder will deliver expert advice on routine commercial and operational matters, as well as supporting major institutional projects, including transnational education partnerships and overseas campus developments. About you We are looking for a qualified solicitor or barrister with demonstrable experience providing legal advice at senior or executive level. You will have a strong understand of legal frameworks relevant to higher education, charities or the public sector – this may include knowledge of the Higher Education and Research Act, Office for Students regulation, charity law and/or public procurement.  The ideal candidate will be highly skilled in drafting and reviewing comprehensive governance frameworks, policies, and terms of reference, demonstrating a robust technical understanding of both risk management and governance frameworks, coupled with a deep understanding of the governance implications arising from major partnerships, collaborations, and commercial ventures.  The role requires high-level autonomous decision making and expert problem solving in a complex and rapidly evolving regulatory environment - the successful candidate will be expected to interpret ambiguous legislation and must be confident making informed judgements and finding solutions where precedent may be limited or non-existent. About us The School of Academic Psychiatry brings together five leading clinical departments Addictions, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic and Neurodevelopmental Science, Psychological Medicine, and Psychosis Studies. Our community includes more than 100 Principal Investigators and a vibrant research portfolio supported by £30–40 million in active grants. Across the School, our work spans the full breadth of psychiatry—from public policy to molecular genetics, from perinatal mental health to old age, and from psychological therapies to advanced brain imaging. This role will be based in the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHBA), Department of Psychological Medicine. The Centre aims to advance the development of biomarkers for neurocognitive disorders and to create innovative approaches for the early diagnosis of cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, and ageing-related psychiatric conditions. As a centre of excellence for clinical trials, we support the development of novel therapeutic strategies and technologies while improving patient access to both established and emerging treatments.  About the role The Clinical Research Fellow will play a key role in the delivery of high-quality clinical research within the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing. Working as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team, the postholder will support the planning, implementation, and evaluation of clinical studies while ensuring strict adherence to trial protocols, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements. A core component of the role will be to work with retrospective data from participants living with dementia and prospectively collected data from ongoing participants for research and analysis purposes, with research supported by the Michael J. Fox Foundation. The successful candidate will also be contributing weekly to the Brain Health Clinic at SLaM under the supervision of Prof Dag Aarsland, providing compassionate and clinically sound support to participants, many of whom have memory difficulties or dementia. The Fellow will conduct cognitive and study-specific assessments, maintain accurate participant records, and ensure timely collection and processing of biological samples in line with SOPs and GCP. The role requires excellent communication skills, with responsibility for maintaining effective relationships with participants, families, clinicians, researchers, and external partners. The Clinical Research Fellow will contribute to data entry, cleaning, analysis, and the preparation of reports and research outputs, as well as participating in clinical and research supervision. This position offers opportunities for professional development, active engagement in service improvement, and involvement in the dissemination of research through presentations, publications, and collaboration across academic and NHS teams. This is a full-time post (40 hours per week). The post will be offered on a fixed term contract until 31st January 2027.
