Established in 1946, Azerbaijan’s Baku Slavic University was originally created to advance the study of Russian literature and language, and to train schoolteachers to teach these subjects to their pupils.
Today, the university has a broader remit, though its primary focus is still on education and languages. Translation is now also a specialism. It has six faculties: education; social sciences; philology; teaching foreign languages; Western European languages; and East European languages. The Azeri language now features, as well as Russian.
The university has student-exchange agreements with universities across East and Central Europe, as well as with the Central Asian countries and Baltic states.
Extracurricular activities include a scientific society, a charities society, a youth-diplomacy society and a journalism club.
