Our department and research environment

Applications are invited for a joint academic appointment as a Chancellor’s Fellow between the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and the University of Strathclyde to develop a leading research programme in optical frequency metrology. The aim of the post is to develop and grow the strategic research partnership between the two organisations exploiting existing strengths and leveraging a ca. £1m investment by NPL in laboratory space and state-of-the-art microwave and optical frequency metrology equipment based at Strathclyde. The aspirations of the post are closely aligned with the UK Government’s strategic emphasis and investment in Quantum Technology in general and Timing in particular in support of Critical National Infrastructure.

The University of Strathclyde has established a position as a leading international centre for Quantum Technology research and innovation, covering activities from fundamental and applied research through to technology development and industrialisation. It is our stated aim to create and nurture a vibrant and internationally competitive cluster of research and innovation based on Quantum Physics. We are committed to creating the translational ecosystem required to develop, test, validate and demonstrate disruptive quantum technologies, and respond to current and future market demand. Together with a range of industrial and governmental organisations NPL is a core partner in this ecosystem.

NPL is a world-leading centre of excellence that provides cutting-edge measurement science, engineering and technology to underpin prosperity and quality of life in the UK. The National Timing Centre (NTC) programme, led by NPL, seeks to establish a resilient time and frequency network in support of national priority areas as well as the acceleration of innovation in new technologies.

The post will be based in NPL’s timing innovation laboratory collocated with the Strathclyde Physics Department and closely linked with the activities of the Experimental Quantum Optics and Photonics Group. This laboratory is equipped with a microwave atomic clock linked to UTC(NPL), an optical frequency comb and an ultrastable laser, and has access to a commercial optical atomic clock. Of particular interest for the post is the establishment of an ambitious joint research programme in optical frequency metrology involving development and validation of optical frequency sources as well as their transfer through free-space links and as a basis for a technology pipeline necessary for responding to the needs of future timing infrastructure and applications.

The successful candidate is expected to have an internationally recognised track record in optical frequency metrology and applied Quantum Technology with demonstrated experience translating technology from the laboratory environment to real-world tests. They will be expected to lead a research programme of international standing, develop knowledge exchange opportunities, attract significant funding, publish in leading journals and contribute to teaching and management of the Department.

We are a collegiate and friendly team who are responsible for the administrative support of the University’s pre-sessional courses; Lifelong Learning; Southampton Language Opportunities and English for Academic Purposes. You will need to be a team player, as this is essential to us and the success of all of the programmes we deliver.

About You

We seek to appoint an assistant professor in product design and manufacture, preferably with the international experience of teaching in a higher education institution.

The person appointed will be expected to contribute to teaching and curriculum development for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and to supervise undergraduate and masters dissertations in the area of product design and manufacture or industrial design. The person appointed will be expected to conduct original research in appropriate fields and play a lead role in collaborative research projects, leading to high quality publications and grant income. The person appointed will also be expected to assist with the administration of the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering and the Faculty of Science and Engineering in general and thus contribute to the Department’s growth in the field of Mechanical Engineering.

The person appointed must have a PhD degree in a relevant engineering discipline and excellent communication and presentation skills in English. Experience of supervising PhD and Master students and experience of teaching, tutorial or laboratory work at undergraduate and postgraduate level in an international English-speaking institution are preferable.

Applications are invited for appointment as Research Officer (RO)/Assistant Research Officer (ARO) in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Clinical Medicine (Ref.: 530461), to commence as soon as possible, on a one-year temporary basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance.

The appointee will participate in a large-scale multidisciplinary research and community youth mental health project. It is Hong Kong’s first territory-wide initiative to build a youth-specific and youth-friendly mental health platform that provides timely preventive intervention to youth with distress and risk for mental health deterioration. The project will transform current youth services and provide a framework for future developments in youth mental health and youth-focused services both locally and internationally.

Applicants should possess a Master’s degree in psychology, social sciences, public health, sociology, statistics or a related discipline and at least 5 years of relevant work experience. A strong background in psychology or community research are preferred.  Applicants should have excellent communication skills, experience in knowledge sharing, and the ability to work independently as well as in a multidisciplinary team. Those with less experience may be considered for appointment as ARO.  He/She will work closely with the unit leader to develop and implement a strategic plan; collaborate with local and international youth mental health experts to evaluate project components and model; prepare reports; analyse data; train and supervise junior research staff; and perform other duties as assigned.

About the End-of-Life Essentials Project

The End-of-Life Essentials (EOLE) Project operates from Flinders University and is funded by the Australian Government, Department of Health and Aged Care.

The EOLE Project provides free, peer-reviewed, clinically relevant and evidence-based end-of-life care education, training and accreditation resources, and other web-based resources for health professionals working in acute hospitals across Australia.  The content of the modules has been developed from the ACSQHC National End-of-life Consensus Statement.

About the Role

Working with the National Project Manager, lead investigators and associated team members, the Project Officer contributes to the implementation of the deliverables for the EOLE Project.

Key activities include the development and implementation of new reporting and data collection dashboard within the EOLE Learning Management System (LMS), providing coordination and administrative support, and communicating with key stakeholders through a variety of channels (i.e. face to face meetings, virtual meetings, email).
