Located in Waltham, Massachusetts, Brandeis University is an American private research university.

Its motto translates from the original Hebrew as: Truth, Even Unto its Innermost Parts.

Founded in 1948 by the American historian Abram L Sachar, the university was named after the former US Supreme Court associate justice, Louis D Brandeis, and was given a Phi Beta Kappa accreditation in 1961.

Pulitzer Prize winners, leading authors and a Nobel laureate can be found among the university’s alumni, as well as the creators of the American television series Friends, David Crane and Marta Kauffman.

Over the years, Brandeis University Press – the institution’s publishing arm – has won several National Jewish Books Awards and been shortlisted as a finalist multiple times.

The university describes itself as a liberal arts college, a global research university and a hub of scholars and students devoted to ‘the pursuit of knowledge and its transmission from generation to generation’.

Being a research institute, it emphasises the progression of the arts and humanities, and social, natural and physical science. As a university focussing on the liberal arts, it believes in the need for students to have a ‘broad and critical education’ to enhance their lives and enable them to fully participate in an evolving society.

Within its faculty, the university comprises fellows of both the American Association for Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as members of the National Academies, Howard Hughes medical investigators and MacArthur fellows.

Brandeis University has a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1 and its campus, which spans 235 acres, includes over 100 academic and residential buildings.

It offers its students over 260 clubs and organisations, as well as 19 varsity sports (nine men’s and 10 women’s).

Its colours are blue and white, and its mascot is known as Ollie the Owl.

Are you interested making logistics more sustainable? This role offers the opportunity to conduct in-depth research into logistics systems, supply chain renewal, and emerging technologies. The professorship of sustainable logistics in industrial engineering and management is located at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) of the LUT School of Engineering Sciences. The position is based in Kouvola, Finland. IEM is an integrative, solution-oriented discipline that addresses organisations and their networks as technological, economic, and social systems with the objective of enabling innovations, creating value, and leading businesses towards high efficiency, profitability, and sustainability. The department’s research focuses specifically on innovation and technology management, logistics and supply chains, operations management, cost and performance management, entrepreneurship, and systems engineering. What we expect from you The professorship will reinforce the IEM department’s logistics and innovation research and education. The person appointed to the position must present strong research merits in sustainable logistics in industrial management. Applicants must have proven expertise in at least one of the following fields: Logistics management and services, transportation systems Supply chain management, sustainability in logistics Artificial intelligence in logistic applications of industrial management Practical experience in the field is not a requirement in this position, but strong evidence of industrial research and development projects is considered an advantage. One position as a research technician (level 3) or senior research technician (level 4) is available in Dr Hans Michael Haitchi’s group in Respiratory Research, Clinical & Experimental Sciences (CES), Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton (UoS). The group is studying the Preclinical efficacy and safety of ADAM33 oligonucleotides as new disease-modifying asthma therapy in pre-clinical murine and human models as part of a Medical Research Council – Developmental Pathway Funding Scheme (MRC-DPFS) grant in 2023 in collaboration with Professor Jonathan K Watts from the RNA Therapeutics Institute at the University of Massachusetts, USA. We hope to move a compound forward toward Investigational New Drug (IND)-enabling studies and clinical development for severe asthma. Dr Haitchi’s group studies asthma and in particular the role of the asthma gene ADAM33 in development of asthma using in vivo and in vitro asthma research models. The posts will be full-time for up to 10 months, funded by a MRC-DPFS grant. Candidates must hold or nearing completion of a relevant MSc or PhD qualification (or equivalent). A background in respiratory research with experience in, molecular biology techniques is essential, microscopy and image analysis and animal models is desirable. We especially welcome applications from enthusiastic candidates with prior knowledge of a broad variety of laboratory research methods and human and/or mouse in vivo and ex vivo respiratory disease research models with a keen interest and willingness to learn new research methods as part of a research team in the UK and USA.
