Bukhara State Medical Institute was founded in 1990 by the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan. When it was opened the institute had just one faculty: the medical faculty. In 1992 the Stomatological Faculty was established and the institute began to expand.

Today the institute is organised into six faculties: the medical faculty; faculty of dentistry; faculty of medical education and higher nursing; faculty of pediatrics; medical biology and medical prevention; international faculty, and advanced training faculty for physicians. Each faculty has a number of departments, which offer both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Throughout the academic year both students and staff participate in research projects specializing in the areas of chest surgery, abdominal cavities, immunity science, pharmacology, biochemistry and morphology. There are also investigations into the influence of ecological factors on diseases and disease treatment methods.

The institute is located in Bukhara, a city in Uzbekistan. Bukhara has an abundance of religious history. The city’s historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to 140 protected buildings. Bukhara is rich with impressive architecture, a preserved royal fortress and remnants of a former market place.
