Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles is a bilingual college of general and vocational education in Gaspé, Quebec.
The Cégep (general and professional college) is the first level of higher education ins in Quebec, the second being the university. Cégeps offer two types of programmes: graduate technical studies programmes, which are mainly designed to prepare students for the job market but they can be used as a precursor to a university programme; and pre-university programmes which prepare students for university studies. Both types of programmes lead to a Diploma of College Studies (DEC).
Courses are taught primarily in French with some English speaking pre-university and technical programmes in natural science, social science and adventure tourism.
It also runs an outdoor adventure studies programme which is a unique initiative in Québec which offers the chance to complete a programme in social science, natural science and participate in a number of outdoor activities such as kite-surfing, rafting and trekking, and even qualify for sport certifications.
Prospective students are able to be "a student for the day". This programme allows students to take a guided our of the campus, interact with other students and teachers and experience some classes.
There are five campuses: Gaspé, Carleton, Grande-Rivière, Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Montreal, although Gaspé is the principal site.
Affiliated with the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles is the Quebec School of Fisheries and Aquaculture which is the only school specialising in this field in Quebec. It offers aquaculture and aquatic products processing programmes.
