About the Role

The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at the University of Melbourne seeks to appoint a continuing full-time position in Ethnomusicology. We are seeking an energetic and collegial scholar eager to shape and expand the Musicology and Ethnomusicology discipline, bringing fresh perspectives on diverse musical cultures.

We welcome applicants with theoretical approaches and ethnographically grounded expertise in traditional or urban music cultures from regions such as the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, or the global South—areas that would enrich our current strengths in musicology, ethnomusicology, popular music studies, and Indigenous studies.

In this role, you will inspire and educate through teaching undergraduate and honours courses, coordinating subjects, and mentoring postgraduate students. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to a rigorous and engaging curriculum that challenges both Bachelor of Music and Breadth (general education) students, while fostering a dynamic research environment.

We are looking for someone with a strong national and a promising international profile, ready to make a significant impact as a thinker and researcher in the field of Ethnomusicology. 

Your responsibilities will include:


	Preparation and delivery of lectures, tutorials, seminars, and workshops in ethnomusicology and the wider curriculum in the Musicology and Ethnomusicology Area
	Coordination of academic subjects and non-western performing ensembles as assigned
	Curriculum development and delivery of subject material in core and elective music subjects and Breadth subjects
	Significant contributions to the field through the publication of peer-reviewed articles, academic monographs, book chapters in edited collections, as well as presentations at national and international conferences, symposia, and other forums
	Recruitment and supervision of honours and postgraduate students in ethnomusicology, musicology, and/or popular music studies as appropriate
	Expansion of the Area’s research capacity through successful grant applications, conference and symposium organisation, and/or national and international collaborations


Who We Are Looking For

We are seeking a committed and engaging educator with experience teaching at the tertiary level, a commitment to inclusivity in student learning, and the ability to work collaboratively with students.

You will possess extensive organisational skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

This position offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the field of Ethnomusicology while fostering your own academic and professional growth within a collaborative and supportive environment.

You will also have:


	PhD in ethnomusicology (or a closely related discipline, and employing ethnographic methods)
	A record of prior experience and effectiveness in lecturing and tutoring at the tertiary level
	Demonstrated experience developing and delivering subjects in ethnomusicology or closely related disciplines
	An ability to teach into subjects on diverse cultural traditions and geographic areas, and on diverse topics (such as music and gender, politics, technology, etc) that complement the strengths of current full-time staff
	A significant publication record (commensurate with career stage) in leading journals and/or with leading international presses

The Design discipline at the School takes a sustainable and humanistic approach which also aims to expand the scope of traditional design into the sociotechnical realms. The three conceptual pillars constitute: (a) Social Design - collaborative design with communities and the public sectors to improve living conditions through critical, systemic and participatory approaches; (b) Design Economies - entrepreneurial design that enhances service innovation and value creation in the private sector; and (c) Design Making - human-centered and hands-on design investigations in labs and with communities, in the practices of making and prototyping via socio-technical means.  They are identified as the three flagship themes to consolidate the research focus and emerging pedagogies in the School.

Duties

The appointees will be required to:

(a)   conduct research as the main duty and actively pursue external research grants, such as General Research Fund, as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator;

(b)   conduct research that leads to publications in refereed journals, or a body of design work which leads to outputs contributing to the knowledge and teaching of the design disciplines;

(c)   provide quality teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level;

(d)   contribute to departmental service; and

(e)   perform any other duties as assigned by the Dean of School or his delegates.

Qualifications

Applicants should:

(a)   have a PhD degree in a related discipline;

(b)   preferably have at least two years of postdoctoral research experience;

(c)   have demonstrated promise of a high level of creative ability in research and teaching in some subdivisions of his/her field;

(d)   be able to demonstrate effective classroom teaching skills; and

(e)   be highly proficient in written and spoken English.

Preference will be given to those with experience in writing research proposals.

Conditions of Service

Year 5/6 Course Development Position, Adelaide Medical School

Academic Level C  $135,388 to $155,696 Pro-rata, per annum, plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies and clinical loading (if applicable).  

24-month, fixed-term, part-time (0.5 FTE) position available immediately 

The Adelaide Medical School provides an innovative and collaborative research and teaching environment, located primarily in the Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences building on North Terrace.

This role is critical to Year 5 and Year 6 course material development for the new Bachelor of Medical Studies/MD (BMD) which was launched in 2022.  The incumbent will work closely with the Course Development Leads for Years 5/6 of the Bachelor of Medical Studies to enable the delivery of a high-quality curriculum.

The incumbent will join a dynamic curriculum development team and will be well supported in this role.  You will possess appropriate clinical experience which will allow you to integrate concepts from across the curriculum. You will also need to demonstrate good interpersonal skills, as an essential activity will be to liaise with clinical academics and titleholders of the Faculty based at various locations (the CALHN, NALHN and WCHN).

The incumbent will also be responsible for:


	Working with others to refine and implement learning activities and outcomes for the 5th and 6th year of BMD
	Liaising with Domain Leads and other Curriculum Leads to ensure learning outcomes and other activities are consistent with Domain maps and objectives, adhere to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) Graduate Outcomes, BMD Program Outcomes, and the University Graduate Outcomes
	Assisting with the preparation of documentation for AMC accreditation requirements
	Working with staff of the Adelaide Medical School to prepare materials for presentation to students and liaising with staff of LEI who are involved with this project
	Assist with implementing the Equity Placement within the 5th year of the BMD.
	Assist with the organisation and delivery of the Scholarly Project in 6th year of the BMD.


To be successful you will need:


	A demonstrated understanding of the complexities of working with the implementation of medical program curriculum in a clinical context
	Good writing skills, including the ability collate work from a number of contributors
	Appropriate clinical experience to allow for the translation of diverse content into teaching activities and an awareness of clinical guidelines to ensure best practice
	Good interpersonal skills including a track record of being able to bring different groups of people together to achieve common goals
	Strong organisational skills and an ability to work to tight deadlines
	Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
	Demonstrated experience of working areas of diversity within health or social service settings
	Research/Scholarly project experience
