About the position

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking to appoint a highly committed, motivated, and creative scientist to join the Northumbria University bioinformatics research group. The research will develop new data science methods that leverage the large amounts of public data from UKBiobank, dbGAP, and internal Whole Sequence data and use state-of-the-art AI/ML technologies, such as transfer learning, LASSO regression penalty, logistic regression classifier model,  supervised mixture elliptical copula model combining them with Bayesian hierarchical.

The role holder will deliver an integrative 3-step Predictive framework (into a web application): you will firstly model Polygenic risk Scores (PRS) according to individuals’ heritable risk, population genetics, environment-modified, and ancestry-specific components of risk in a Bayesian hierarchical model using priors defined by LASSO regression penalty functions. Secondly, you will refine the Disease Risk Prediction according to the computed individuals’ PRS, clinical parameters, family history of the disease, genetic ancestry, lifestyle, and socio-demographics in a logistic regression classifier model. Thirdly, you will model a supervised mixture elliptical copula model to stratify individuals into optimal groups according to the predicted risk. 

The researcher will evaluate the portability and transferability of the developed Predictive framework by leveraging large Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS) data of prostate cancer, Cardiometabolic traits from UKBiobank, dbGAP, as well as joint replacement patient data. The developed predictive framework will be deployed into a web application linked to Cloud Computing resources.

This role is fixed term until November 2026.

Due to the timescales associated with the project and the need to have the appointable candidate in post by 15th December 2024, it will not be possible to consider candidates who do not have a current right to work in the UK.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The role-holder will be based at Northumbria University, City Campus, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, Department of Applied Science. You will closely work with the Principal Investigator (Professor Emile R. Chimusa). Travelling and attending subject specialist meetings and national/international conferences will be required. The nature of the post is such that the role-holder is expected to work and attend at the University’s premises such hours as are reasonably necessary for the effective discharge of the duties of the role, within a normal working week of 37 hours. The department has strength in life science research, state-of-the-art multi-omics laboratories that generate data-intensive biological resources, and a strong track record of public and industrial funding (https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about-us/academic-departments/applied-sciences/).

ABOUT YOU

 To be successful in the role you will have: 


	PhD or soon to be PhD qualified (or equivalent experience) in relevant discipline of bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics data science, statistics genetics, or biological computer science related to genomics/GWAS  
	Good understanding of polygenic risk scores (PRS) analysis, and AI/ML/Bayesian models. 
	Excellent critical programming in Python and R,  and large-scale genomic data analytic skills.
	Ability to develop web applications, and databases (e.g. in PostgreSQL) and handle DevCloud. 
	Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.
	Authorship in peer-reviewed literature.


There must be a willingness to be flexible with working patterns in line with the demands of the project and to travel if necessary.

The Faculty of Bio and Environmental Sciences is looking for a Laboratory Coordinator for the Laboratory of Molecular Ecology and Systematics

Job description

The Laboratory of Molecular Ecology and Systematics (MES) is a shared research facility (core facility) at the Viikki campus, maintained by the Faculty of Bio and Environmental Sciences of the University of Helsinki, which focuses on molecular biology research of natural populations of non-model organisms. The MES laboratory is a shared laboratory, and most of the research groups that use it work in the Organismal and Evolutionary Biology Research Program of the faculty. Capacity allowing, its services are also available to all research groups operating at Viikki campus as well as to external users. A dozen research groups are actively working in the MES laboratory, and in addition, its equipment is used by a large number of other researchers of the faculty.

MES laboratory is specially designed for studying molecular variation in a high throughput manner using state of the art approaches with a view to better understanding ecological and evolutionary processes. MES laboratory offers facilities and equipment for multiple research groups for ’omics-related methodologies and analyses including: large scale DNA, RNA and protein extraction and quality assessment, library´ preparation for genome, transcriptome and structural genetic (e.g. ATACseq) sequencing and gene expression analyses (qPCR, transcriptomics including single-cell RNAseq).

The laboratory coordinator is responsible for the maintenance and coordination of the laboratory's functions, the development and upgrading according to the needs of its users, as well as the safety of the laboratory, and acts as a supervisior for some of the technical staff working in the research program.

Coordination includes, for instance,


	Knowledge of the equipment and analysis software and keeping it up-to-date,
	Contacts with authorities (e.g. GMO permits)
	Administrative responsibility of the laboratory, including invoicing
	Negotiation of services offered to research groups outside the faculty


The coordinating tasks also includes introducing new employees to the laboratory and guiding the use of equipment and software. The coordinator also offers, when possibile, technical support for the MES laboratory users in the techniques in use. The coordinator is responsible for the operations of the MES laboratory, in cooperation with the head of the laboratory.

Qualification and experience

The coordinator is expected to have good knowledge and experience in the operation of a molecular biology laboratory, ability to organize the operation of a shared laboratory, good interaction skills, and interest and initiative in developing the methods used in the laboratory. Completed university degrees are considered an advantage when selecting a coordinator. The working environment at the Viikki campus is international and good English language skills are essential for the coordinator's job and proficiency is Finnish is considered an advantage.

Salary and employment

The salary for the position is determined according to the demand level of other staff in the universities' salary system. The requirement level of the laboratory coordinator is 7-8. In addition to the task-specific salary component, a salary component based on personal performance is paid. The position has a six-month trial period. The Process Systems Engineering research group in the Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering  is now looking for a motivated

Doctoral researcher in Process electricification 

Do you enjoy mathematics and want to use your knowledge on chemical processes to create decision-making tools for the future industry? If you are a creative and analytical person and like programming this might be something for you!

We are looking for a doctoral researcher (“PhD student”) to work on the interesting field of energy transition. In particular, we would like to understand how the plans for process electrification could be realized such that the transition of production processes and its environment is both feasible, economic and sustainable. In this work the concepts of chemical engineering, operations research and computer science will meet as you may also need to deploy machine learning to support data analytics and complex decision making processes.

Your role and goals

You will be responsible for conducting research in the area of process electrification, with a specific focus on developing collaborative models on how to link production into energy systems on the planning level. You need to work in the following topics:


	Create models that can embed the dynamics and flexibility of both processes and energy systems (e.g. power grids)
	Implement your models using state-of-the-art optimization solutions
	Analyze the relevance of energy storage options and other energy carriers (e.g. hydrogen)
	Look into the sustainability of various alternatives and embed these into decision making
	Collaborate with experts across school borders to support the topical development


For this specific position, the doctoral candidate will be expected to perform independent research, to collaborate with different groups, to present at scientific conferences, to publish in academic journals, to apply for research funding, to participate in the activities of the research group, and to assist in teaching activities (max 5% of working hours).

Your network and team

This position will be based in the Process Systems Engineering group led by Prof. Iiro Harjunkoski, which focuses on finding solutions on how to design and operate future production systems and supply chains using collaborative models and modern optimization tools, also supported by machine learning. Here, energy and sustainability play a very important role. We also collaborate with other groups to learn more about and support topics such as circularity, hydrogen economy, etc.

The unique competitive edge of the Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering  in the School of Chemical Engineering is based on sustainable utilization of raw materials, designing more efficient processes and developing new materials and products. Our department’s areas of expertise enable sustainable future with high performance products and processes in circular economy and bioeconomy. The department is in a key position in research of chemical engineering, materials technology, metals processing, efficient energy technologies and digitalization of these. Our core competences include unit operations and processes in chemical engineering, hydro- and pyro-metallurgy, catalyst and polymeric materials, novel catalytic process, process control and process systems engineering.

Your experience and ambitions

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with previous experience in:


	Computer-aided decision making
	Mathematical modeling and optimization
	Experience or interest in artificial intelligence / machine learning
	Good programming skills, e.g. Python or equivalent
	Supply chain planning of chemical processes, energy systems or in another relevant area


The experience should be demonstrated by evidence of success in related studies, and ideally also by some publication record. Other merits demonstrating suitability for a doctoral researcher position can also be considered.

Experience in writing research proposals for funding acquisition is an asset. Candidates should have an initiative-taking approach, should pay attention to details and have high aptitude in continuous learning, and experience or ambition to co-operate with industry. Candidates should hold or shortly receive a master’s degree with good grades in a relevant field (Chemical engineering, Process Systems Engineering, Energy or Electrical engineering, Industrial engineering).
